Kathrin & Alex flew in from Germany to elope right in San Francisco. Besides being their wedding photographer, I also got to be their witness! Here’s a sneak peek of the magical and intimate day I had the honor to be a part of:

Hank and Lyn started planning for this baby photoshoot before Tobin even came out into the world. I got to spend a quiet Sunday morning with the three of them as they went through their routine for a relaxed portrait session with baby Tobin. Here are some of my favorites from the one-hour photoshoot.
When I arrived, Tobin had just woken up from a nap. He was a little groggy, but totally up for hanging out with his mom and dad. I love the little smirk he gives to the camera as his parents kiss him on the cheek.

This is his surprised Gerber baby face. He’s ready to be the next baby model since he takes photography direction so well.

I envision the following set of images used for a birth announcement. Often, when I photograph portraits, I don’t simply focus on the subject’s face (as most traditional portraits do). I think you can tell a lot about a person from their hands, feet, and other details. Here is a family portrait told from the interaction of the hands and feet of mom, dad, and son. In the last image, mom and dad are tickling Tobin and his joy is coming out of his energized little toes.

Another shot in Tobin’s baby modeling portfolio.

We had a semi outfit change by putting this bright and colorful ducky bib on Tobin. I love the clash of patterns and bright colors in this birds eye shot. I generally don’t recommend color or pattern clashing, but it works for a kids photo due to its playfulness.

Kisses from his mom make him very happy.
.jpg)
Tobin started to suck on his thumb and his mom took that as a cue to start feeding him. He looks absolute cute, innocent, sweet and angelic in this photo.

While Lyn was breastfeeding Tobin, I asked if I could snap a couple of photos. She said yes and I ended up taking one of my favorite baby portraits. I love the following shot for its intimacy.

It’s still spring and it’s totally baby season, so I hope you’re all running around outside your kids, pushing those strollers, soaking up the sun. Oh, and remember to take lots of pictures of your kids (or hire someone to) because they’re going to grow up real fast!

Bev & Ross met me at the Bear Valley Visitor Center in Point Reyes National Seashore park. Beverly and Ross had gotten engaged in Carmel, California (whose ex-mayor was Clint Eastwood, justsoyouknow) and we ended up doing the engagement photography session in Point Reyes, which has a similar aesthetic (huge trees by the seashore).
The three of us hiked a little ways into the park until we found this tree-lined street. Ross was jumping with joy. I love Bev’s pop of red in the otherwise green scene.

Gates used to keep cars and cows out were a great place for the two to pose. I love their brown leather shoes together.

This magical bridge within Point Reyes National Seashore made me think of Bridge to Terabithia (just pretend that book/film had a happy ending).
Point Reyes National Seashore is the perfect place for a Northern California engagement photography session. All of the different backdrops really showcase the beauty of NorCal, from wide open fields, redwoods in forests, and rocky beaches. We moved into a big open field where the two lovebirds fluttered around.

Bevelry played with Ross’ hair a bunch, which was too cute. Then Ross excitedly climbed up this tree and reached down for a kiss. I think he looks like a pirate.

They wouldn’t stop giggling. There was a lot of twirling in the fields.

Picnic time!

In the middle of our shoot, Beverly changed outfits like Beyoncé at the grammies. No, she only did one outfit change, so I guess that’s not quite the same. Apparently, Beverly found this gorgeous dress at a thrift store! I wouldn’t believe it. It really would’ve worked as her wedding dress. If this thrift store find was this gorgeous, I can’t imagine what her wedding dress looks like.

Ross kissed his giggling fiancé ’til I told him he had to get out of the shot; I needed Bev alone for a model-status bridal portrait. I mean, look at the light through that dress! Sorry, Ross.

Wide open fields, white dresses, and cowboy boots make me want to watch indie films and listen to folk-rock. So I posed them like they were an indie duo.

Originally, we were just going to limit ourselves to one location, but the moment Beverly put on that gorgeous flowing white dress, I knew we had to go to one of my favorite secret spots in Point Reyes (which is actually in Inverness). I had stumbled across this shipwreck once while looking for a secluded beach, and I had mentally bookmarked it knowing I’d one day find the perfect couple to photograph there. When Beverly put on that dress, I knew it was time! We drove out, the tide was low, and everything looked like a gorgeous apocalyptic wasteland. They looked like two shipwrecked/stranded lovers.

Ross helped Beverly cross and then we had some fun exploring the area surrounding the shipwreck.

The shipwreck in Inverness is on private property, but the owners are happy to allow visitors as long as we left nothing but footprints and took nothing but photographs.

This is one of my new engagement photos that I’ve taken. When the three of us were planning Bev and Ross’ marin-county engagement photography session, we didn’t dream we’d end up shooting near this shipwreck in Point Reyes. But we did.
Stay tuned for the rest of the images from this engagement session at the end of the week. I’ve been MIA due to a West Oakland mugging where I had my equipment stolen. Trying to edit wedding photographs and engagement photographs without a computer is impossible (try it, I dare you). Even contacting my clients has been slow due to not having the technology to do it. Thank you all for your patience as I try to piece things back together.

The truth is, I don’t do enough photography for myself. When your full time work is as a wedding photographer or couples’ photographer, etc., your day to day is filled with editing other people’s photos. That means that when you have a few minutes (or a day if you’re really lucky), you put the camera away. I’m trying to shoot more for myself, so, I’m planning more photography adventures.
My friends and I went to China Beach on a ridiculous gorgeous Sunday afternoon in San Francisco. We were lucky enough to not get any fog and decided to make it a picnic and photo adventure. The three of us were lying on the sand when we see three gorgeous women walking past us. I joked that I should put them in a yogurt commercial or something that advertised healthy happy lifestyles. Suddenly, one of the women turned back and waved. I asked my buddies if they knew her. They said no, so I looked behind me to see if the woman was waving to someone else.
ENTER a kind-faced gent, walking down the stone stairs of China Beach, seemingly unaware of the gorgeous girl who just waved at him! My friends and I speculated if he knew them or if they were together. The man walked over to the edge of the water and stared off into the sunset.
“He’s a nice guy,” my friend David said.
“What makes you say that?” I asked.
“He’s carrying a thermos,” Mischa said.
“What does that have to do with being a nice guy?” I asked.
“That means he was planning for warmth,” David said.
Clearly their logic had no holes in it. But the kind thermos man was 100 yards away from the gorgeous girls. Clearly there as a love connection waiting to happen. They needed to meet each other, David and Mischa told me. He’s a nice guy. They seem like happy, nice women. SOMETHING NEEDS TO HAPPEN.
So I said, “I’m going to make this happen!” and ran over to the water where thermos-man was waiting.
“Excuse me,” I said. “I don’t mean to bother you, but…actually clearly I do. That’s why I’m here.” I asked if he knew the ladies on the other side of the beach. It turns out, HE IS MARRIED TO ONE OF THEM. So, it turns out, I didn’t have to do any work in setting them up. But look at my love-connection skills! I take absolutely no credit for this, but I’m excited anyway. Anyway, I asked Anthony if he could pretend like he was meeting Becca for the first time so I could tell my friends I set them up. They acted wonderfully. My friends were so impressed.
For their help in making me look like a superhero, I asked if I could take photos of them for about 5 minutes. They were just too adorable. Check out how cute and in love they are.
